Lessons
We'll discuss your driving experience (if any) and your goals. You will need to develop your knowledge of Road Rules and Safe Driving Skills, so a checklist is completed as we go, on areas we need to focus on during each lesson. By the time you are ready for your test, you will be a safe and knowledgeable driver.
Nerves - It is perfectly normal to have first driving lesson nerves but be assured that your driving instructor is experienced in dealing with nervous learner drivers and they are expecting you to have those first driving lesson nerves. Your instructor will be patient and friendly and will try their best to put your nerves at ease. Your instructor will not shout, get angry or irritated when you make mistakes. You are after all a learner. Another frequent reason for driving lesson nerves is students expecting too much from themselves. Don’t try too hard to do everything perfectly correctly on your lessons. Making mistakes is what enables us to learn. Relax during your lessons, you will learn far more.
Mistakes - You are only human and therefore likely to make plenty of mistakes. Your instructor is used to this and is expecting this, especially over the first few lessons. Just do your best, that's all the instructor is looking for.
What makes a good instructor? - The best driving instructors are those that are friendly and patient but are also firm at resolving driving related issues. You may feel dejected if your driving instructor seems that they are constantly addressing faults, but this is a necessary part of the process. The best driving instructors must address each and every issue however many times they need to, but it is also important to balance this with praise on all the learner’s achievements. Good instructors are also able to alter, or on occasions, completely change, teaching techniques to accommodate a learner's abilities. You may have heard of, or had friends deal with instructors that shout at the slightest mistake made. This type of behaviour is inappropriate, unprofessional and is a sign of a bad driving instructor. Shouting at learners just makes them even more tense and stressed and will affect their ability to learn. A driving instructor should pull you up on any errors that are made, as unaddressed errors will be highlighted during the driving test and almost certainly result in a fail. Check their credentials, are they qualified to the national standard? and finally don't get caught by cut-price lessons - as the old saying goes 'you get what you pay for'!
Finally remember driving is a privilege, not a right and a privilege that can be taken away. It’s up to you as a driver to ensure the safety of those you travel with, as well as being a safe and responsible driver for the others on the road.
